“One not only drinks wine, one
smells it, observes it, tastes it, sips it, and – one talks about it.” -- King Edward VII (1841-1910) |
MAY MEETING:Bob Hutton told us “A Tale of Two Rivers” last month and accompanied it with tasting of Sauternes and Tokaji wines. What a marvelous evening it was. These concentrated wines were sweet, but balanced and delicious in all aspects of their enjoyment. To go along with the wines, Mr. Hutton’s Food Assistant, Glenda Leister, made an appropriate presentation. The foods she prepared were a fabulous match to the wines. Some of the foods were: apple tartlets, Roquefort-stuffed celery, smoked salmon, chevré with olive tapenade on toasted baguettes, pate on biscuits, fig preserves on crackers, walnuts, and fresh French bread. All of this was prepared to mix and match with the following wines:
Before we started, we also enjoyed a glass of the 2001 Egri Bikaver from Hungary. Remember, most of the tasting wines are sold in half bottles since they are such concentrated and special wines. But, as you can see, it was quite an evening with the wines, Bob’s commentaries, and, of course, Glenda’s marvelous nibbles that really enhanced the enjoyment of the wines. Thanks again to both Glenda and Bob for a great evening! |

JUNE MEETING:We are scheduled to remain on the continent this month for our next tasting. However, we will be journeying to the Iberian Peninsula where Karen Stokes will be guiding us through a tasting of Spanish wines. There is a great variety of wines made here as well as a high level of quality and some great values to be found. Plan to come out and see just what Spain has to offer! The meeting is scheduled for Friday, June 18, 2004 at St. Mary’s Church. The gathering will begin at 7:30 p.m. while the formal meeting should get underway at 8:00 p.m. Please RSVP at least 24 hours in advance if you are planning to attend so we will have enough of everything. Call 703-941-2384 or complete the following RSVP form. |
