“Burgundy makes you think of silly things, Bordeaux makes you talk of them, and Champagne makes you do them.”

-- A Toast by Napa Valley Wine Greats

NOVEMBER MEETING:

In November, we compared Cabernet Sauvignons by vintage.  After three social wines which were three different vintages, but also three different wineries, we tasted three flights of two wines each.  Each flight was from one winery, but each wine was a different vintage.  From such a relatively small sampling, it is unfair to draw any firm conclusion, but we will anyway.  It seemed that most people preferred the wines that were a bit older and had mellowed a bit more; but when a wine may approach that "too old" stage, the younger one is preferred.  Below are the wines tasted (including social wines) along with their prices and the number of votes they received as the preferred wine of the flight:

Year
Producer
Cost
Votes
1999 Glass Mountain $ 6.49
2001 Smoking Loon $ 8.00
2002 Ironstone Vineyards $ 7.99
2002 Hess Select $11.99 4
2000 Hess Select $15.99 8
2001 Estancia $ 9.79 7
2000 Estancia $10.49 3
1999 Sebastiani $14.99 7
1998 Sebastiani $17.99 5

JANUARY MEETING:

In 2005, we will be getting back into somewhat of a routine schedule. To prolong the holiday spirit a bit longer, though, we'll be tasting sparkling wines.  We haven't had a full meeting devoted to sparkling wines for a while, so it's time to sit back and enjoy the bubbles while learning a bit about how those bubble get into the wines to begin with.  So mark your calendars now, the meeting is scheduled for Friday, January 21, 2005 at St. Mary's Church.  The gathering will begin at 7:30 p.m. while the formal meeting should get underway at 8:00 p.m. Please RSVP at least 24 hours in advance if you are planning to attend so we will have enough of everything.  Call 703-941-2384 or complete the following RSVP form

DUES:

Hopefully you all found many ways to properly celebrate the holidays over the past month or so.  Now, we have entered a brand new year with a fabulous set of wine tastings in store for us. As always, with a new year, our annual mailing list dues are owed. They are $8.00 per mailing address − no increase from past years! Please pay them at our next meeting, or mail your check, payable to Northern Virginia Chapter AWS, to Dave Barber, 4069 Championship Court, Annandale, VA 22003-2426. Also, if you have not already done so, National AWS dues are also owed for the year 2005. Remember, the National By-laws require membership in National AWS if you are a member of a local chapter, and we are a local chapter of the American Wine Society, so, therefore, you should also be a National member.  I always have applications at the meetings if you need one.

See you on the 21st!   Looking into the future, the following meeting will be on Friday, February 18th.

Cheers,
Dave Barber
