“Some of these '82s and '83s
won't be ready for a long time. If we wait much longer, our kids will be toasting us over our graves! Let's drink up what we have and let them but their own.” -- Burgess Meredith (1908-1997), actor and wine lover, excerpted from a 1986 interview |
JANUARY MEETING:The new year started off with a bang. So we continued the celebration with some sparkle! Our last tasting featured sparkling wines. And, what better way to find out just how much one really knows on the subject than to take a quiz. Grant Crandall was the most knowledgeable (or at least the best guesser) of those present and won a bottle of Sofia (the Blanc de Blancs from Frances Coppola) to reward him for his knowledge. Along with discussing the correct answers to the quiz, we also discussed the methods used in making sparkling wines and many other associated tidbits. I think it was a very educational and informative evening. It left everyone wanting to open another bottle to see if they could count all the 56,000,000 bubbles in that one, too! The wines tasted, including the first one poured as the social wine, were as as shown below. If you missed this meeting, too bad. You missed some great wines, but try them on your own!

FEBRUARY MEETING:This month, our meeting will concentrate on one area of wine production. And, that area is not one that will readily pop into your mind when you think of wine. Mary Anne and Mike Wassenberg will present Wines from the Heartland, or Midwest Matching. They plan a fascinating blind tasting of these wines made along Route 66, so plan to attend and learn about and taste the wines being made in this up and coming region. Mark your calendars now, the meeting is scheduled for Friday, February 18, 2005, at St. Mary's Church. The gathering will begin at 7:30 p.m. while the formal meeting should get underway at 8:00 p.m. Please RSVP at least 24 hours in advance if you are planning to attend so we will have enough of everything. Call 703-941-2384 or complete the following RSVP form. |

DUES:Don't forget that our annual mailing list membership assessment is due. The cost is still only $8.00 per mailing address. If you haven't already paid, please pay them at the next meeting or mail them to me at 4069 Championship Court, Annandale, VA 22003-2426. Also, if you have not already done so, National AWS dues are due for the year 2005. Remember the National By-laws require all members of local AWS chapters to also be members of National. |

TOUR GUIDES:
The 2005 Virginia Festival and Tour Guides are finally available, so be
sure to pick up your copy the next time you visit a Virginia
winery. We now have over 90 wineries in the
Commonwealth! Once again, the Passport program gives you
an added incentive to visit the wineries throughout the
year. Plan to get out and visit the wineries this year! |

See you on the 18th! Looking into
the future, the following meeting will be on Friday, March 18th.
