“When wine and cheese are paired well,
they nourish more than the body –
they nourish the entire spirit.”

MAY MEETING:

ABC (& PG) was the topic for last month’s tasting.  Grant and Angela Crandall definitely did much research and put together a great list of affordable white wines that would make great additions to anyone’s summertime tasting list.  Grant provided a list of grape varieties with nary a Chardonnay nor Pinot Gris/Grigio among them.  Then, one by one, Angela expertly poured a wine into our glasses.  Of course, the label on the bottle was concealed, and it was our task to identify the varietal and/or region of origin.  Some people were good (or lucky?) and able to identify some, but many were just pleasantly surprised with the quality of the wine and its subsequent identification.  In tasting order, the following wines were tasted (including the first two social wines):

Year
Producer
Varietal
Apellation
Cost
 2003
Indaba Chenin Blanc South Africa $  7.99
2004 Robertson Sauvignon Blanc South Africa $  9.99
2004 Nobilo Sauvignon Blanc Marlborough, New Zealand $  9.99
2003 Château Bonnet Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon Entre-Deux-Mers, France $ 10.99
2003 Winzer Krems Grüner Veltliner Austria $  7.99
2004 Palma Real Viura Rueda, Spain $  8.99
2004 Hope Verdelho Hunter Valley, Australia $  9.99
2004 Santa Julia Torrontes Mendoza, Argentina $  8.99
2003Full Moon Winery, Honey Moon
ViognierCalifornia $  5.99
2003 Fetzer Gewürztraminer California $  6.89
2003 Georg Albrecht Schneider Riesling Kabinett Niersteiner Germany $ 11.99
2002 Cascinetta Vietti Moscato d ‘Asti Italy $ 12.99
2004 Quady Electra (Muscat) California $  9.99

As you can see, it was a full evening with many different varietals and wines from many countries around the world.  An informal vote resulted in the Torrontes being the favorite, with the Viognier and the Viura tied for the second favorite.  Thanks again to both Angela and Grant for all of their research, their interesting twist on the tasting, and for a great evening!

And the evening wasn’t quite finished, since Bob Hutton brought a couple of bottles of 1998 Weingut Kirsten Riesling Brut to share so that we could all help to celebrate Julia’s birthday (39 and holding)!

JUNE MEETING:

Mike Schlosser is scheduled to present at June’s meeting.  He has chosen his topic to be ‘Wine 102… or 201 bottles, whichever you prefer’.  So plan on attending and stake a claim on at least one of those 201 bottles!  The meeting is scheduled for Friday, June 17th, 2005, at St. Mary’s Church.  The gathering will begin at 7:30 p.m. while the formal meeting should get underway at 8:00 p.m.  Please RSVP at least 24 hours in advance if you are planning to attend so we will have enough of everything.  Call 703-941-2384 or complete the following RSVP form

See you on the 17th!   Looking into the future, the following meeting will be on Friday, July 15th.
